A lot has been reported in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hit as a result of the smoking ban in England. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big tax cuts to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But will the internet variation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or might it not compare to its land based opposite?

Bingo has been an ancient game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game lately had undergone a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women opting to hit the bingo halls rather than the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to change with the introduction of the cigarette ban across England and Wales.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public locations will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favorite places where people like to smoke.

The outcome of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo halls. Numbers have plummeted and the industry is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Surely they haven't given up on this classic game?

The answer is on the web. People are now realizing that they can play bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beer and smoke and in the end, enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent development and has happened almost perfectly with the anti cigarette law.

Of course wagering on on the web could never replace the social portion of heading over to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
