An abundance has been written in the papers not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big aid to help keep the industry alive. However does the internet version of this classic game offer a escape, or might it not compare to its land based opposite?

Bingo is an enduring game generally played by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game lately had witnessed a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society opting to go to the bingo parlours rather than the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to be reversed with the enacting of the cigarette ban throughout UK.

No longer will gamblers be able to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public areas will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favorite places where people like to puff on cigarettes.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already prohibited in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did the players go? Of course they haven't cast aside this enduring game?

The answer is on the internet. Players know that they can bet on bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and cig and still enjoy huge jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.

Of course wagering on online is unlikely to replace the communal part of going down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of players the law has left many bingo players with no option.

New Mexico Bingo

New Mexico has a complex gambling history. When the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was signed by Congress in 1989, it looked like New Mexico would be one of the states to get on the American Indian casino bandwagon. Politics guaranteed that would not be the situation.

The New Mexico governor Bruce King assembled a task force in Nineteen Ninety to discuss a contract with New Mexico Native bands. When the working group came to an accord with 2 important local bands a year later, the Governor refused to sign the bargain. He would hold up a deal until 1994.

When a new governor took office in 1995, it seemed that American Indian gaming in New Mexico was a certainty. But when Governor Gary Johnson signed the contract with the Indian bands, anti-wagering groups were able to hold the contract up in the courts. A New Mexico court ruled that the Governor had out stepped his bounds in signing the accord, thereby denying the government of New Mexico many hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees over the next several years.

It took the CNA, signed by the New Mexico legislature, to get the ball rolling on a full contract between the Government of New Mexico and its American Indian tribes. 10 years had been lost for gaming in New Mexico, which includes Amerindian casino Bingo.

The nonprofit Bingo business has grown from 1999. That year, New Mexico not for profit game providers brought in only $3,048 in revenues. That climbed to $725,150 in 2000, and passed one million dollars in 2001. Not for profit Bingo earnings have increased steadily since that time. 2005 saw the largest year, with $1,233,289 earned by the providers.

Bingo is certainly popular in New Mexico. All types of providers try for a slice of the pie. Hopefully, the politicians are done batting around gambling as an important matter like they did back in the 90's. That is most likely wishful thinking.
