Will the Smoking Ban in the United Kingdom Force Bingo Players On to the Internet?
Much has been stated in the papers recently about the bingo industry being hit as a result of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big tax breaks to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. However will the online version of this classic game provide a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar peer?
Bingo has been an ancient game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in popularity with younger people deciding to visit the bingo halls rather than the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to be reversed with the legislating of the cigarette ban all over United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. Starting in the summer of '07 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular locations where folks enjoy smoking.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo parlors. Players have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they haven't deserted this established game?
The answer is on the web. People realize that they can play bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and cigarette and still enjoy massive cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course wagering on on the net is unlikely to replace the communal part of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left many bingo players with no alternative.
